What is a Death Doula?
A death doula serves as a vital anchor for both the dying individual and their family, filling the non-medical gaps that often exist in end-of-life care. While hospice focuses on physical comfort, a doula provides consistent emotional and spiritual support, helping the person navigate the complex transition with dignity. By facilitating difficult conversations about legacy, fears, and final wishes, they ensure that the dying person feels truly heard and seen, transforming a period of high anxiety into a more peaceful, intentional experience.
Beyond the bedside, death doulas act as essential guides for the family, easing the heavy burden of logistical and emotional overwhelm. They help demystify the dying process, explaining what to expect and providing practical "respite" care so that loved ones can focus on meaningful connection rather than just caretaking duties.
